How to Kill Mold and Mildew on Shower Curtains

Shower mildew          Mildew, mold, and soap scum are a shower’s worst enemies. Mold and mildew love to build up on the inside of shower curtains. The wet shower environment is perfect for mold and mildew to thrive on and grow. This is why shower curtains will usually become moldy and mildewy very quickly. Mold and mildew can cause allergies in many people as well as being unsightly in the bathroom. Follow these steps to eliminate mold and mildew from bathroom shower curtains and make sure it doesn’t return.

Step 1

In order to best keep mold and mildew away from shower curtains you must use a two piece system. Throw out your current moldy shower curtain. Buy another shower curtain as well as a clear or colored (your choice) mildew resistant shower curtain liner. This is very important. You must purchase the mold and mildew resistance curtain liner. These are specially manufactured to prevent mold growth. Attach your shower curtain in your shower. Then on the inside of the shower curtain attach the mildew resistant liner. The liner will act as a moisture barrier to prevent mold growth on the main shower curtain.

Step 2

After each shower spray the mildew resistant liner as well as the shower curtain with daily use soap scum remover spray. There are certain sprays that are not strong which are used after every shower that help keep soap scum and mildew from forming.

Step 3

Once a month use a homemade anti mold spray to spray down your shower curtain and liner as well as the entire shower. You can make this spray by combining either one quarter of a cup of vinegar or tea tree oil in a plastic spray bottle filled with a full cup of water. Shake the mold killing mixture in the spray bottle well. Then spray it all over the shower curtain and liner on the sides facing the inside of the shower.

Step 4

Dehumidifier for moldRun a portable dehumidifier in your bathroom every day. The dehumidifier should be set to a humidity setting below 40% relative humidity. Keeping the relative humidity low all day long every day will prevent mildew spores from reproducing and spreading all over your shower curtains.

Step 5

If you still periodically see mold and mildew growth on the milder resistant shower curtain liner, then periodically discard the liner and put a new one up.
