Step 1

Penn State is a fairly competitive school to get into. In fact only about 50% of applicants actually get accepted to Penn State. 50% of incoming freshmen are in the top 10% of their high school classes so it is quite a competitive bunch. The average GPA for incoming freshmen is 3.55. Over 75% of students have a gpa above 3.25.

Step 2

Improve your SAT scores with some SAT prep books. Pennsylvania State University is very competitive in its SAT scores. 65% of incoming students have Math scores above 600, 43% have scores above 600 in Critical reading, and about 50% have scores above 600 in writing. Penn state offers good scholarship money to their top high school applicants. So if you can score higher in your SAT’s as well as your GPA in high school when you apply to Penn State compared to your peers you will be in good shape to get a merit based scholarship. Just make sure you fill out your FAFSA as well by the deadline date so you do not miss out. Without the FAFSA Penn State will not be able to determine the extent of your family’s financial need and as a result may not award you much money even if your grades are high.

Step 3

Review the admissions requirements. Penn state requires that your guidance counselor fill out a special form and your high school transcripts as well as SAT scores be sent to them. Penn State undergraduate admissions does not require letters of recommendation. The application fee is a non refundable $50 dollar fee. The deadline for fall and summer admissions is November 30th. For Penn State International Students the deadline for fall admissions is February 1st.
