Apply for Food Stamps

The food stamp program is a program that enables low income families or individuals to get assistance with food purchase on a monthly basis. The program that runs food stamps in the US is called SNAP or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. There are certain eligibility requirements to become eligible to receive food stamps under SNAP including income guidelines and resource requirements. Follow these steps to apply for food stamps for your family if you meet the requirements.

Step 1

Call your local state SNAP office hotline. Each state has local offices that operate under the food stamp program. The local offices handle all of the applications for and distributions of food stamps. You can find your local food stamp hotline by using the locator tool on the main SNAP website.

Step 2

In order to get food stamps you may have up to $2000 in resources. Resources include such things as money in a bank account or vehicles not used for income related purposes.

Step 3

Check your requirement for income. Income requirements for the food stamp program vary depending upon how many people are in your household. Basically the more people in your household the more income you are able to make before you stop qualifying for food stamps. Use the SNAP website to lookup food stamp income eligibility guidelines.

Step 4

Your food stamp benefit amounts will vary from a couple hundred dollars a month to over a thousand dollars depending upon how many people you have in your household.

Step 5

Check out the requirements if you are elderly and over 60 years old. The requirements are generally more lenient if you are elderly and you may qualify for more food stamp benefits.
