Natural Remedies for GERD

           GERD or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease is a disease affecting many people across the US. GERD is a terrible disease that can cause serious problems if not resolved. Often times it is silent or does not show many symptoms until it does serious damage to your esophagus then symptoms becomes horribly apparent. Gerd can be caused by many different things but is characterized by similar symptoms including acid reflux, excessive chronic heartburn with attacks that damage the lining of the esophagus leading to esophagitis, or Barrett’s Esophagus, bloating, hoarseness in voice, a sore throat when waking up in the morning, esophageal inflammation, adult onset asthma, as well as chronic sinus inflammation. Step 1

If you are experiencing symptoms from gerd you should elevate the head of your bed 4 to 8 inches. You can do this in many ways such as putting blocks under the head posts of your bed to raise the frame. You may also raise the head of the boxspring by putting something like Hardcover books under the boxspring to raise the head by 4 to 8 inches. Raising the head of your bed will put your body in an elevated inclined position at night while you are sleeping. This will angle the stomach such that stomach acid contents will be pulled by gravity back to the bottom of the stomach. So if you have flare ups of gerd at night while you are sleeping the slight angle will eventually cause the acid to slide back down your esophagus into your stomach. This remedy is more effective the higher the head of the bed is elevated. So elevate it as high as you can and still be able to sleep comfortably. Everyone who has GERD symptoms should automatically use this technique because much of gerd reflux occurs while you are sleeping at night causing damage to your esophagus and throat while you are sleeping. Step 2

Do not eat at least 2 to 3 hours before going to bed every night. A major cause of gerd is when people eat a full meal right before going to bed at night. The stomach takes a couple of hours to digest your food before the lower stomach valve opens releasing your stomach contents into the duodenum. If you lie down to sleep within an hour or two after eating your stomach will be full of food and acid, so if you have a gerd attack that acid will easily come back up your esophagus and burn it causing damage. It is very important for everyone who has Gerd to not eat full meals at night or snacks before going to bed.

Step 3

Lose weight if you are overweight. Another major contributor to adult gerd and acid reflux is being overweight. Overweight individuals has excess fat around the organs in their midsections which put pressure on the organs including the stomach and push up on the stomach increasing the chance of acid refluxing back up into the esophagus. Many times losing significant weight is enough to stop the symptoms of GERD.

Step 4

Many times gerd is aggravated and increased by your stomach’s overproduction of its own acid. This can be caused by many things such as genetic abnormalities, H. Pylori bacteria, or an excessively high PH environment in the stomach caused by ingesting too many alkaline liquids while eating which causes the stomach to overproduce its own acid in an effort to overcompensate for the alkaline ph and lower the overall stomach environment acidity. The ways to reduce this problem is to drink a low PH liquid such as a fruit juice or soda with every meal. The acidic drink will signal your stomach to stop overproducing its own acid. Step 5
