How to Defrag (Defragment) your Computer

Computer defrag          Your computer may become slow from time to time and clogged up with unnecessary files. There are several ways to speed up your machine. One popular method is a way of reorganizing files on your hard drive so that the computer has an easier time accessing them. This is called defragmenting your hard drive. Defragmenting your hard drive will increase the speed of your computer and should be performed from time to time to keep your machine running smoothly.







Step 1

Unecessary file foldersDelete all unnecessary files from your computer. This will speed up your machine because the hard drive will have less information that it needs to go through to access the files you do actually use on your machine.






Step 2

Find your defragment utility and run it. In windows this is some combination of Start Menu, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.


Step 3

Click the Analyze button. This will analyze your hard drive to determine whether or not you need to defragment your computer. Sometimes defragmentation is not necessary.



Step 4

Hit the defragment button. Defragmentation may take up to 30 minutes or more depending upon how slow your computer is and how large your hard drive is. Do not run other programs while your computer is defragmenting.

 

Additional Advice

                   Defragment your computer at least once a month. Or use the defragment analyze utility to check more or less often if it needs defragmenting.
