How to Get Firefighter Training in your City

Firefighting is a great profession that requires a lot of upper body strength and stamina. Firefighters are real life heroes who save people from burning buildings and help save structures from collapse and damage. Firefighting takes hard work and dedication. This profession carries a lot of danger and risk with it. It is not for the faint of heart. There are different types of firefighters including local town volunteer firefighters, city firefighters, and wildland firefighters. No matter what the firefighter type follow the steps below to get firefighter training.

Step 1

Contact your local town or city hall and ask for the number of the local firefighter station. Small towns with small populations usually have volunteer firefighter programs that are easier to get into than larger city or government firefighting programs. Call the firefighter number and ask if they have a volunteer firefighter program. If they do ask what the next step is to join. If they allow you to get firefighter training you may have to complete a 110 hour National Fire Protection Association certified course.

Step 2

Enroll in firefighter school. Firefighting school is not available in all locations. Some schools will offer a fire science associate or even bachelor’s degree. This degree includes subjects such as crisis management, safety procedures, and fire extinguishing classes. Getting a college degree in fire science is the best step you can take to becoming a firefighter.

Step 3

Take a fire science certificate course. A certificate course is much less valuable than a fire science associate degree, but it is a step in the right direction if you want to become a firefighter.

Step 4

Make sure you meet the requirements for a fire science certificate as well as firefighter training. Some of the requirements usually are being 18 years or older, having a high school diploma, perfect vision, and passing a physical at the doctor’s office.

Step 5

Apply for an apprenticeship in firefighting. An apprenticeship in firefighter training entails a few years working with a real fireman learning the ropes. You will follow a firefighter and gain knowledge based on their experience. This is the best way to become a firefighter yourself.

Step 6

Take additional training to advance your firefighting career such as CPR courses, and first aid training.
