How to Make a Big Snowman

Big snowmen are harder to create than regular snowmen. Building a big snowman requires some practice and a little bit of skill. However the results are worth it as a big snowman will make your neighbors jealous of your winter skills and you will become the envy of the neighborhood. A big snowman will draw more attention to your winter and Christmas decorations. It is also a good family bonding experience to build a big snowman because it will take time and the effort of many helpers to create.

Step 1

Start building your big snowman on a day when the temperature is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and the snow on the ground is of the wet heavy type. Make sure there is at least 6 to 12 inches of snow already on the ground. You will need a lot of snow to work with when building your big snowman.

Step 2

Fill a small plastic container with water and bring it outside. Also get a large brush. You will use the water when building your giant snowman. The water will help when building the large portions of the snowman’s body so that they will not come apart.

Step 3

Roll a small snowball into as perfect a spherical shape as possible. Using the water you brought from step 2 dip the brush into the water bowl. Brush water over the entire snowball. Now set the snowball aside for the water to harden.

Step 4

Repeat step 3 with two more snowballs. These will be the middle and head of your big snowman. The purpose of brushing the balls with water is to create structural rigidity along layers in the snow balls in order to make them stronger so they will not fall apart when you build your big snowman.

Step 5

Take each of your three snowballs and push them along rolling them in the snow. Roll them such that they gain in size by picking up snow on the ground all around the snowball. If the snowball starts to grow unevenly then use your hand to carve out enough snow to keep it as round as possible.

Step 6

After each snowball gains in diameter by a few inches, stop. Now repeat the process of brushing water all around the snowballs with your brush. Let the snowballs sit for a while for the water to harden.

Step 7

Repeat steps 5 and 6 until you have reached your desired diameter for each of the snowballs. Remember that the head of the big snowman is smaller than the torso or middle section which is smaller than the base.

Step 8

Assemble your big snowman by keeping the largest snowball on the bottom. Stack the next largest on top of that and the smallest at the top as the head of your big snowman.

Step 9

Brush a final layer of water all around your big snowman so that the ice will harden and keep the snow inside from falling to the ground.

Step 10

Decorate the rest of your big snowman with buttons, a scarf, hat, and carrot for its nose.

Additional Advice

Do not use light fluffy snow to build your snowman. This type of snow will not adhere well and you will not be able to build a big snowman. In fact it will most likely fall apart.
