Horses are beautiful animals that people have domesticated for thousands of years starting in 4,000 BC. Horses for sale are wonderful animals that are very strong and have a lot of body muscle. They have a high ratio of muscle to fat and this makes them excellent creatures at expending energy over long periods of time. This is one of the reasons they are efficient runners. Their bodies in a sense are designed anatomically for galloping and trotting. Pet horses can last anywhere between 20 to 40 years. Horses can be classified by sex and age. For example a male horse under the age of 4 is called a Colt and a female horse under the age of 4 is called a Filly. Female and male horses over the age of 4 are called Mares and Stallions, respectively. Now, males that are castrated are called Geldings. Ponies on the other hand are generally smaller horses or horses that did not achieve a certain height by maturity. Ponies may also have shorter legs and thicker bones than regular horses. Horses for sale come in a variety of colors and types so if you are looking to buy a horse for sale then follow the tips below to help you research a pet horse.

Step 1

Figure out whether you want a male or female horse for sale. Opinions vary, but some riders and horse owners believe that female horses tend to be more moody. They recommend you to purchase a male castrated horse or a gelding which will typically be less moody than a female horse. However both male and female horses can make good riders.

Step 2

Decide on the coat color and other physical aspects you will want your horse to have. You may have to review several types before deciding. General horse coat colors are chestnut, black, and bay with many variations including different shades of red, black, and grey. Some horses dubbed white have white hair coats.

Step 3

Determine what purpose you want to buy the pet horse for. Is it for riding or competition riding? Is it just for a pet with occasional riding. These factors may way on your decisions. If you are looking for an endurance riding horse, these horses are typically not deemed to compete until at least 5 years old when their bone structure and muscle structure is mature enough. Other horses are broken in to ride below 4 years old such as between 2 to 4 years. You can purchase a horse that is already broken in and trained to ride to make it easier on yourself.

Step 4

Research what it takes to purchase a horse. There are many horses for sale around the United States. Some people run horse stables with the sole purpose of breeding and selling pet horses. There are also many websites online that sell horses in a classified type format. Here you can look at pictures of horses and find out information about the horse before going to see the horse. You can also ask the owner of the horse many different questions that you may have about the horse online without having to go see them in person. This is very convenient if the horse for sale you want is not found close to your community.
